$ Case Study for DDR333/400 REG ECC DIMMs: SMP servers such as Intel SE7500, SE7501 (SE7505 for workstation), SE7320 (PCI-X 66MHz slots), SE7520 (PCI-X 133MHz slots), and SE7525 (PCI-E x16 video card slots) are based on DDR-266 (PC-2100R), and DDR-333 (PC-2700R) registered ECC DIMMs. Intel upgrade SE7320 and SE7520 servers with DDR2-400 DIMMs on 3Q 2005 but the real market is single CPU based units that to drive down the cost for DDR2 memory modules. AMD Opteron servers are based on DDR-266 (PC-2100R), DDR-333 (PC-2700R), and DDR-400 (PC-3200R) registered ECC DIMMs. Memory is one of the key components that can gain 3% - 15% performance by hardware optimization; I won't be surprised to see 15% to 60% performance gain with both hardware and software optimization.
